Rennie Cook, who has served in leadership positions at OU for more than eight years, began his new duties as associate vice president for Alumni Affairs and executive director of the OU Alumni Association on March 1. Cook fills the position formerly held by Tripp Hall, who has been named vice president for University Development.
“I am honored that President Boren and Vice President Hall have asked me to serve the University in such a vital capacity,” Cook said. “Under their leadership, the OU Alumni Association has experienced amazing growth and success. I am eager to work with the talented staff of the Alumni Association and the passionate, generous alumni who make up its membership. It is a wonderful opportunity for me to work in another area of the University that is achieving excellence.”
Cook, who earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from OU and is currently working on his doctoral degree, began his OU career as an academic adviser in the Summer Enrollment Program. He later joined Prospective Student Services, ultimately becoming director. While in Prospective Student Services, he helped start the Sooner Scout program, which enlists current OU students to assist in recruiting students from their high school, and helped recruit what at the time was the largest freshman class in OU’s history.
Cook served as executive director of OU Health Sciences Center Student Affairs from 2002 to 2004 and director of Student Life and associate dean of students from 2004 to 2007. In fall 2007, he was named assistant vice president for Student Affairs and was responsible for Student Life, Judicial Services, and the Center for Leadership Development and Volunteerism. Under his leadership, Student Life saw Camp Crimson grow to its largest numbers and secured funding from the U.S. Department of Education to begin the Sooner Upward Bound Program, which prepares 50 eligible students from five inner-city high schools for college entry and success. Student Life also renewed the McNair Scholars Program during this time.
In 2006, Cook received the OU Student Association’s Walter Neustadt Award, which recognizes a staff member for outstanding service to students at OU.
Cook has been a member of OU’s Staff Senate and Campus Campaign Committee. He also has served on the board of directors for Cleveland County Habitat for Humanity, Leadership Norman, and the Housing Corporation of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
